Information Warfare – Fighting for Your Attention

This is part of a micro-campaign aimed at raising awareness about the growing issue of online disinformation. This initiative is a joint effort of the Polish Association for Security and the NATO DEEP eAcademy, with support from the Institute for Research and Social Education Foundation and the Institute of Journalism and Social Communications at the University of Warmia and Mazury.

Information warfare is no longer a distant military concept—it’s an everyday reality that affects what we see, hear, and believe online.

In recent years, especially following Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the ongoing war in Ukraine, information warfare has intensified. From state-controlled media to troll factories flooding social networks with propaganda, the goal remains clear: to manipulate public perception and control narratives.

What Does Information Warfare Look Like?

  • Troll factories using fake accounts to promote specific messages
  • Bots that auto-post disinformation triggered by keywords
  • Fake news crafted to mislead and sow confusion
  • Cyberattacks targeting journalists and media outlets
  • Social cyber-attacks shaping how we see the world

This battle is being fought not only on traditional fronts but also in cyberspace—where your timeline might be a battleground. Information warfare often goes unnoticed by the average media user, yet its effects can be profound, altering how societies view global conflicts, elections, and even each other.

Escaping the Echo Chamber

Algorithms create echo chambers that reinforce our views and limit exposure to differing opinions. One key to resisting disinformation? Step outside your bubble. Seek diverse sources, question the narratives, and stay critical.
